Rainbow meditation and relaxation

 

Rainbow brings meditation and relaxation techniques into primary schools, giving children life-long tools to manage stress and anxiety, improve their self-awareness, find calm, develop better concentration and boost creativity. We do this in three ways:

  • Running workshops with primary school children to introduce them to a range of yoga, breathing and meditation techniques.
  • Teaching 6 or 12 week schemes of work, integrating meditation into the curriculum across age ranges. For example, teaching meditation classes in school for 1 or 2 days per week for a term or half a term.
  • Running workshops with teachers, to train them in meditation techniques for use in class to support children's learning on an ongoing basis. For example, one day training workshops run in school on INSET days, or one-to-one training for individual teachers giving them the skills to become the meditation teaching 'coach' for the rest of their school.

The meditation and relaxation techniques we teach and use are designed to:

  • Help to build children's confidence through developing a deeper connection with their inner self and self-worth
  • Offer opportunities to reflect upon themselves and those around them in a non-judgemental way    
  • Encourage empathy for others and improve relationships with others as a result
  • Give children the mental tools and inner resources to help them deal with difficult situations with a clearer perspective
  • Improve concentration, clarity of ideas and focus
  • Encourage creativity and imagination
  • Offer experiences and insights into ways to calm down when feeling stressed and angry
  • Help to develop flexibility, strength and general physical fitness
  • Provide children with a wonderful opportunity and lifelong gift by teaching them to access and tap into  their 'inner world' and enjoy the feeling of peace, relaxation and calm it brings, in a busy world where we too seldom actually take the time to simply 'be' or enjoy the moment

My name is Tracey Rix and I run Rainbow Meditation and Relaxation. I first started using meditation and relaxation techniques as a primary school teacher in the late 1990s. Teaching in difficult schools in West London, I introduced simple breathing and yoga warm-up exercises as a means to calming the class and managing difficult behaviour. Over the years I studied meditation more formally, trained to teach it and it has now become a passion of mine to introduce it into schools on a more formal basis.
